Passport Applications

Canada’s immigration minister has showcased the updated Canadian passports.

Since 2013, there has been ongoing work to update the passport, aiming to boost its security features and minimize forgery.

The redesigned passport integrates heightened security elements to protect Canadian citizens’ identities. Minister Fraser pointed out the addition of a polycarbonate data page, where the passport holder’s personal details will now be laser engraved instead of ink printed. Such changes make the data page more robust and harder to tamper with or forge. Additional features include a unique transparent window displaying a secondary image of the holder, a variable laser image, and ink that responds to temperature changes.

Speaking about the design, Minister Fraser emphasized that it reflects Canada’s rich natural landscapes. This design was crafted after extensive discussions with diverse groups. He also noted the necessity to refresh passport designs periodically to reinforce security standards.

During this period of transition, Minister Gould noted that some Canadians might continue to get the older version of the passport during the summer months. However, she confirmed that these passports are still valid and maintain their security features.

How to Procure a Canadian Passport:

To secure a Canadian passport, you need to submit an application, accompanied by the following documents:

  • A birth certificate or a citizenship certificate as proof of Canadian citizenship.
  • Your existing Canadian passport or any valid travel document.
  • A photocopy of a valid ID.
  • Two matching passport photos, with details like the applicant’s name, address, and photo date mentioned on the back.

If you possess documents in another language, translate them accurately into English or French and include the translations.

Additionally, include details of two references in your application. These references must not be related to you and must have known you for at least two years.
